Third Way

As I mentioned in my last post, I'm thinking that grad school might not be the way to go, and that I'm going to re-apply to Peace Corps, as a more direct learning experience.

My big problem was that going to grad school to learn how to work in international development does not seem very productive.  What I need to do is to either a) develop my own ideas on how to go about solving some of these seemingly intractable problems, or b) find someone or some organization that I feel is going about it in a good way.  USAID was one of my first thoughts, and it might still be an option, but it has its problems.

Peace Corps was my first thought of an organization that would let me get on the ground and experience the problems first-hand.  In this way, I could form my own opinions and work with other organizations on the ground.

However, a less radical solution came to mind the other day.  While USAID (and many other organizations) require a master's degree for employment, there are also other who do not.  This little nugget of information slipped my mind, and I decided to start poking around.

I found this: DevelopmentWorker.com.  There are a bunch of jobs out there for people with bachelor's degrees.  What I need to do now is to find one that a) requires only a bachelor's degree, b) will let me learn the things I want to learn, c) is smart about how they go about things, and d) isn't evil.

(Also, it wouldn't hurt if they paid half-decently.)

So this is my Big August Project.  Check back for updates.

UPDATE: Jobs like this! (though, duh, I need to graduate first, but this serves as an example that, after only 15 minutes of searching, I found a job I'll be qualified for at a place I'd like to work.)  So this plan is winning.

And this is one of the only songs I could find with the word "way" in it.  Also, I gave up looking pretty quickly.
